Many Shades of Grey

Who would think that black and grey could make a statement?  I bought this base of Snowflake Obsidian feeling that I may have it awhile before I designed a basket using it.  Then I entered a show where I needed a basket that reminds me of a book.  I have not read the book, but I liked the name!  The base is accented with small cubes of Snowflake Obsidian.  The Pendants on the sides are grey Labradorite surrounded with Muhly Grass sewn with grey, natural, and black waxed linen thread.  All in many shades of grey!

Lavender Ice

I am so happy that the base of Purple Feldspar can be seen in this photo.  It is hard to capture the deep purple color, but my new camera is doing a great job.  The pendants  on the sides are small chunks of agate.  Never seen these before and there was only one strand!  The Muhly Grass is accented with plum and lavender waxed linen thread.  Smaller in size, but distinctive.

Hidden in the Hammock at Cross Creek

The colors in this stone base a truly amazing.  The deep greens, accented with wine and browns.  It is called Parrot Wing Jasper.  The coiled Muhly Grass is punctuated with various colors of Fancy Jasper nuggets.  They compliment the many colors of the base.
I tried to pickup the deep wine color on the sides with wrappings of green and maroon waxed linen thread.  Another one of the smaller sized baskets.

Stone Leopard

This is one of the smaller in size baskets that I have been trying to make this year.  The stone is a stunning Leopard Jasper with shades of rust and yellow on a brown field.  It reminds me a nice northern fall day with all the colors fall foliage.  It's also quite heavy.  The coiled Muhly Grass is accented with butterscotch Yellow Jade and nuggets of amber.

Ride a Painted Horse

This basket is created from coils of Muhly Grass grown and harvested by the artist. The Arizona stone, called Wild Horse, is a stone containing red ochre and magnesite. Red Ochre was used by early Indian cave painters.  The stone is stunning in its colors or dark red and white but also contains shades of yellow and purple.  The agate beads in three sizes:  pendants, round faceted, small beads.  These add color and sparkle to the movement as suggested by the checkered pattern of the rust colored waxed linen thread.

Approximate Size:  13 x 10 x 5 in.

Price: $425

Tree of Light

"Tree of Light" is a basket set on an unusual Tree Agate. The agate actually looks like a tree of white "leaves" with a green "trunk".  The brown pine needles are attached to the base with thread not drilling holes. Then the lighter colored Muhly Grass is added and coiled with waxed linen thread. The dark eight Russian Jade pendants and two shades of smaller jade beads adorn the sides.  Tree agates are the owner's attachment to Mother Earth and promote well being.  Jade has always been  representative of fertility.

Peaceful Pond

This usual stone is called Porcelain Jasper.  It has a very surrealistic quality in that each person can see a different picture.  The light grays and salmon pink of the Jasper is pickup with the color of the Magnesite stones in both round pendants and beads.  The coiled pine needles showcase the base and finish with Muhly Grass.  The Muhly Grass is growing well right now and I have taken my first cutting of 2012.  Just picked up some fertilizer for my plants since the daily rains will insure good watering.  This basket is just one of several that I have made and hopefully will post soon.  This size seems to be the growing trend in galleries.  I have been asked to create more.  And I will!
