Gray is the Mist

This basket has an unusual blue lace agate in the base.  It solidified in two steps showing a layered portion, then the usual round section.  The blue gray color helped name this piece.  The basket is formed by coiling the muhly grass that I grow.  The pendants on the sides are ocean jasper, each stone a picture to itself.  Small cubic jasper beads add an interest to the upper rim.

Labrador Lights

This basket was created from the muhly grass I grow in my flower beds.  It's so nice to know I have an unlimited supply of weaving material!  This is a basket that just didn't want to be finished.  The raw Labdorite base has wonderful rainbow colors on both sides; it was difficult to decide which to show.  Luckily I had purchased the small beads and large faceted pendants when I found the base.  As you can see I added some small ones in the bottom to help round out the base.  It wasn't until I had finished placing the large pendants three weeks later that I discovered that I had lost the remainder of the small beads.  No problem, I thought, and raced to my local bead store.  It was then I found that Labdorite comes in different shades from green cast to gray.  The store had green, I needed gray.  A frantic email to my supplier of wonderful "rocks" in South Carolina, a long two days wait for Susan to find another strand, and yes! one more strand of faceted Labdorite beads were located in the garage.  I actually used more small beads in the end and am satisfied with the result.

Autumn Vortex

This basket of muhly grass is set on a beautiful base of fused glass made by my good friend,  Marsha Bisson.  An accomplished glass artist, Marsha was kind enough to join my query of cooperating on a joint piece of work.  I gave her a request of a 6 inch round base and the rest was her imagination and expertise.  The black glass has wonderful sparkles of internal light that is difficult to capture in a photo.  The colors of rust, gold, green and black are repeated in the thread pattern and the Aventurine pendants. This basket won First Place at the "Spring Show 2012" sponsored by the Art Council of Southwest Florida, an organization of art groups in the five county area.
